Night Watch
Matthew Ryan Fischer
No one was ever going to trust Bagus again, Maliq was sure of
that. It didn’t matter how many days he stayed out of trouble, or how many ways
he tried to prove he wasn’t being followed or watched or wired. No one could trust
him after his arrest. Rama was a stand-up man, but Rama was MIA presumed dead. Bagus
may have worked for Rama, but Bagus was a bitch by comparison. People figured
the first thing Bagus did was run his mouth. Probably why he was arrested but not
charged with anything.
Take him out and see how he does…
That was code for kill him if anything seems off, no matter how small.
Maliq figured he could use an extra set of eyes and muscles for a day or two,
but if Bagus was a rat then anything they did together, the cops would know
about. Maliq found himself actually hoping they got into trouble. Either Bagus
could prove himself, or maybe get himself injured or killed. It wasn’t that
Maliq didn’t want to kill him, or wasn’t capable, but it seemed so much easier
this way. He wasn’t feeling sorry for the guy.
“What are we doing here?” asked Bagus
“Just watch.”
“Watch for what?”
Maliq didn’t want to tell him that. He didn’t want to tell Bagus
any of what they were doing or what they might have to do. He thought this might
be a solution, but he realized all the other guys were right, no one wanted to
work with Bagus because no one could trust they weren’t next.
I’m trying to decide if I should kill you or
not…
Maliq tried not to laugh.
They were waiting for one of three people, Yaz, Junko or The
Queen. Bagus would recognize two out of three, but as soon as they started
following any of them, he would realize relationships had changed. He didn’t
know that Yaz and Junko were suspects now. That would have required someone
telling Bagus and no one was going to do that. But if one or more of them
showed up, Maliq planned on saying it was their job to provide extra security
but that they had to stay hidden. Maybe it would make him feel like a spy or
something and not ask too many questions.
Eventually The Queen was on the move and eventually he had to say
a few words to Bagus. The trip wasn’t long so the conversation was thankfully
short. The arrived outside a fancy apartment building and watched as The Queen
met another man. They spoke for a few moments then headed inside.
“What do we do? Should we follow?”
Maliq didn’t respond. He wanted to find out from the bosses first.
He also didn’t want Bagus around when he talked to anyone. Bagus was too much a
liability.
“Yeah, that sounds perfect. Stay close, but don’t let them see
you. If they take an elevator try to figure out what floor the go to.”
“What about you?”
“I’ve got to call the bosses and get more men.”
